ALL ABOUT METEORITES

So what is a meteorite really? Sure you probably already guessed its a rock from outer space. But if you're a true nerd like me, that basic explanation just won't do! You want to really know, like really really!

Okay, let's start with where meteorites come from. The words "outer space" mean a big place, way too big! Outer space technically covers everything from just outside the Earth's atmosphere, to the furthest parts of the entire universe.

Meteorites only come from within our own Solar System. They don't come from other star systems, or galaxies far far away. Nope! Meteorites are basically pretty local chunks of stuff, especially when you consider just how big the universe is!

Scientists are still unravelling the mysteries of what parts of our Solar System all the different meteorites come from, but so far they have done a pretty good job. We know most of them come from asteroids located in the inner and outer asteroid belts, as well as the Moon, and Mars. That's right, we have pieces of the Moon and Mars right here on Earth!
